China demands immediate reversal of U.S. tariffs, vows retaliation

China has called on the United States to revoke its latest tariff measures, warning that it will implement countermeasures to protect its economic interests.

The demand comes after U.S. President Donald Trump imposed sweeping tariffs on all U.S. trading partners.

In response, China’s Ministry of Commerce criticized the move, stating that it disregards years of multilateral trade agreements and the benefits the U.S. has long enjoyed from global trade.

“China firmly opposes this and will take necessary steps to defend its rights and interests,” the ministry declared.

Trump recently announced a 34% tariff on Chinese goods, in addition to an earlier 20% levy, bringing the total to 54%.

This figure is close to the 60% tariff he had previously suggested during his campaign.

Under the new policy, Chinese exporters—alongside businesses from other nations—will face an initial 10% tariff as part of the broader 34% levy starting Saturday, with additional tariffs coming into effect on April 9.

Trump also signed an executive order closing the “de minimis” trade loophole, which had previously allowed low-value shipments from China and Hong Kong to enter the U.S. without duties.
