Abia govt moves to crackdown on traditional rulers protecting criminals

The Abia State government has announced plans to intensify its efforts to combat criminal activities by closely monitoring traditional rulers who may be harbouring criminals in the state.

At a press briefing on Wednesday in Umuahia, Okey Kanu, the state’s Commissioner for Information, revealed that security agencies would carry out targeted raids based on reliable intelligence to root out areas where criminals are being sheltered.

Kanu made it clear that any traditional ruler found to be shielding or protecting criminals would face legal consequences as part of the government’s commitment to eliminating insecurity in the state.

He urged town unions and traditional leaders to uphold their responsibilities in ensuring the safety and security of their communities.

“Just a few weeks ago, a prominent business mogul and son of this state was kidnapped in Ukwa. Thankfully, security agencies have confirmed his release, and he is in good health as verified by medical personnel,” Kanu stated.

The commissioner also reiterated the government’s dedication to safeguarding the welfare of all Abia residents and called on the public to remain alert and report any suspicious activities to the relevant authorities.
