Wike approves employment of 34 resident doctors for seven-year training program

The Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) has approved the employment of 34 resident doctors for a fixed seven-year residency training program, marking a significant step in strengthening healthcare services in Abuja.

The recruitment, sanctioned by FCT Minister Nyesom Wike, represents the first batch of 60 medical residency trainees across eight faculties and specialities in FCTA hospitals.

Senior Special Assistant to the FCT Minister on Public Communications and Social Media, Lere Olayinka, announced the development in a statement on Wednesday, highlighting its impact on healthcare delivery.

“This is the first time this is being done outside employees of the Health Management Board, thereby giving doctors more opportunities and bringing more competent hands into healthcare delivery in the FCT,” Olayinka stated.

According to him, the newly employed doctors are distributed across various specialities: five in psychiatry, four in internal medicine, one in general surgery, one in anesthesiology, eight in family medicine, six in ophthalmology, and nine in obstetrics and gynaecology.

Olayinka also revealed that the FCTA Civil Service Commission would soon commence the recruitment process for the remaining 26 resident doctors, covering specialities such as psychiatry, internal medicine, general surgery, anesthesiology, and pediatrics.
