Governor Ademola Adeleke of Osun State has announced that any traditional ruler who fails to maintain peace in their community will be removed from office.
In a statement issued by his media spokesperson, Olawale Rasheed, on Monday, the governor expressed that actions would be taken against the traditional rulers of Ifon and Ilobu/Erin-Osun communities in Orolu and Irepodun Local Government Areas if they failed to prevent further violence and de-escalate existing tensions.
The governor’s warning came in response to reports that unidentified groups in the conflict areas were planning new attacks.
“During the Sallah celebrations, I received reports of plans for fresh conflicts in Ifon, Ilobu, and Erin-Osun towns,” Governor Adeleke stated.
He added that security agencies have intensified their surveillance to prevent any violence and are swiftly interrogating key figures involved in the conflict.
“I want to remind the leaders of these towns that the peace agreements they are signing must be taken seriously. They will be held accountable, and the law will hold them responsible,” he said.
The governor clarified that the earlier relaxation of the curfew was a humanitarian gesture to alleviate the suffering of innocent citizens, but he warned that any attempt to exploit the adjustment for violence would result in the re-imposition of a 24-hour curfew.
“I will not hesitate to remove any traditional ruler if violence resurfaces in their community. This is a serious matter. The royal leaders must ensure their subjects adhere to peace,” Governor Adeleke emphasized.
He concluded by stating, “Enough is enough. I will take decisive action to ensure peace prevails.”
