Following the tragic killing of graduate John Johnson by suspected herdsmen in Zhayidna, near Angwar Hakimi, Orozo in Abuja, the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Commissioner, Saka Adewale, has instructed the State Investigations Department (SID) to take over the investigation.
Residents of Orozo and the youth organization to which the deceased belonged revealed that Johnson, a member of the Boys Brigade, was brutally murdered on Saturday night.
His body was reportedly dismembered after the attack.
In a statement from the Police Command’s Public Relations Officer, Josephine Adeh, the FCT Police Commissioner, Ajao Adewale, confirmed the tragic incident and announced a thorough investigation into the attack. The incident occurred on March 29, 2025, at a Boys Brigade camp in Zhayidna Village, Karshi.
The statement read: “The Commissioner of Police, FCT Command, Ajao Adewale, has ordered a discreet investigation into the attack on the Boys Brigade camp in Zhayidna Village, Karshi, by unknown individuals. The attack led to the death of one camper, Johnson John, who was rushed to Karshi General Hospital but was unfortunately declared dead on arrival.”
Adeh further mentioned that the investigation was ongoing and that local community leaders were cooperating fully with the police to ensure the suspects were apprehended.
For emergency assistance or to report suspicious activities, residents were encouraged to contact the command’s emergency lines: 08032003913, 08061581938, 07057337653, or 08028940883.
The Chief of Igala in Orozo, Amadu Zachariah, confirmed the attack and expressed his disappointment with security forces for their failure to apprehend the culprits.
Zachariah explained that the Boys Brigade initially set up their camp in Zaina but had to relocate to a nearby church for shelter due to an approaching rainstorm.
He noted that two group leaders returned to the original campsite to retrieve their belongings when they were ambushed by suspected herdsmen.
One leader escaped, but Johnson was caught and tragically killed.
An eyewitness account supported Zachariah’s statement, detailing that after the group moved the children to the church for safety, two of the leaders went back for their things.
They were ambushed by individuals believed to be Fulani herdsmen.
One leader managed to escape, but Johnson was fatally attacked. By the time villagers arrived, Johnson had already been killed.
Local authorities were notified, and a police investigation was launched.
Upon arriving at the scene, law enforcement discovered that Fulani herdsmen living in the area had fled, raising suspicions of their involvement in the attack.
