Panic in Benue as Miyetti Allah reports cattle poisoning, rustling

The Benue State chapter of the Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association of Nigeria (MACBAN) has raised concerns over the alleged poisoning and theft of cattle belonging to its members in Agatu Local Government Area (LGA).

State Chairman of MACBAN, Risku Muhammed, disclosed over the weekend that more than 20 cows owned by Fulani herders were poisoned on Saturday in Ucha village.

Additionally, he reported that over 200 cattle were rustled last Thursday.

However, security operatives intervened, leading to the arrest of one suspect while others escaped.

According to Muhammed, a farmer in Ucha allegedly laced rice chaff with poison before inviting a herder to feed his cattle on it.

As a result, 13 cows reportedly died instantly, while seven others are currently receiving treatment from a veterinary doctor.

He commended Agatu LGA Chairman, Melvin Ejeh, for his prompt response to issues affecting both herders and local communities.

Muhammed further revealed that herders had previously lost numerous cattle to criminals in various communities, including Olegodege, Utigologwu, Egwuma, Akele, Okwtanobe, and now Ucha.

In response, Agatu LGA Chairman Melvin Ejeh confirmed receiving MACBAN’s complaint and assured that the matter was under investigation.

He disclosed that a farmer had been arrested in connection with the poisoning and emphasized that Agatu had been enjoying relative peace due to efforts by the state government and security forces.

“We have received complaints from Miyetti Allah, and investigations are ongoing. Agatu has experienced peace, thanks to the Peace Committee that was set up, which continues to review the situation daily. Unfortunately, some criminal elements are trying to disrupt this progress, but the government will not allow that to happen,” Ejeh stated.

He called on the state government to deploy more security personnel to the area to prevent further incidents.

Meanwhile, the Police Public Relations Officer in Benue, CSP Catherine Anene, confirmed the incident, stating that investigations were underway.

She also acknowledged the presence of a Peace Committee actively working to maintain stability in Agatu LGA.
