Deaf Pedestrian killed by reckless commercial bus in Lagos

Must read

A tragic accident over the weekend claimed the life of a deaf pedestrian after a mini commercial bus, known as Korope, struck him on Mobolaji Bank Anthony Way in Ikeja, Lagos.

Eyewitnesses said the driver, allegedly speeding recklessly, lost control of the vehicle and swerved off his lane.

In an attempt to regain control, he crashed into a stationary mini bus before fatally hitting the pedestrian.

Confirming the incident, Adebayo Taofiq, Director of Public Affairs and Enlightenment at the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA), revealed that the crash involved two Suzuki mini buses with registration numbers EPE 279 YJ and BDG 558 YG.

“LASTMA operatives responded swiftly to secure the scene and alerted the Area ‘F’ Police Division, which took custody of the vehicles for further investigation. The State Environmental Health Monitoring Unit (SEHMU) also evacuated the victim’s remains to the General Hospital, Ikeja,” Taofiq stated.

Reacting to the unfortunate incident, the Special Adviser to the Governor on Transportation, Sola Giwa, extended condolences to the victim’s family and urged commercial drivers to adhere to traffic regulations.

He emphasized the importance of the Intelligent Transport System (ITS) in monitoring speed violations in areas such as Alapere, Ogudu Road, and Nitel on Mobolaji Bank Anthony Way.

“Road safety is a collective responsibility. Reckless speeding and disregard for traffic rules put lives at risk. I urge all motorists to comply with regulations to prevent avoidable tragedies,” Giwa stated.

Authorities have assured the public that a thorough investigation is underway to determine further details surrounding the crash.
