The Jigawa State government has commenced the distribution of N840 million to victims of the fuel tanker explosion that devastated Majia town in Taura Local Government Area in October 2024.
The tragic incident claimed many lives and left several others injured.
During the distribution ceremony in Majia, Governor Umar Namadi expressed deep sorrow over the loss of over 140 lives, most of whom were young men under 30.
He announced that the funds would be shared among 210 affected families, with each receiving N4 million.
Out of this amount, N500,000 is being given in cash, while N3.5 million is deposited into individual accounts opened for the victims at Jaiz Bank.
Providing further details, the governor stated that the disaster impacted 167 households, with 140 fatalities and 70 injuries.
Among the deceased, 33 were married, and 31 of them had children, leaving behind a total of 40 widows and 130 orphans—70 males and 33 females.
Governor Namadi reassured residents of the government’s commitment to preventing similar tragedies in the future.
He highlighted recommendations made by a committee set up to investigate the incident and pledged to implement measures aimed at reducing the risk of such occurrences.
He also disclosed that as of March 26, the government had received a total of N839,686,680 in redeemed cash donations.
He promised transparency in the distribution process and stated that a full list of contributions from individuals and organizations would be made public.
The governor urged beneficiaries to use the funds wisely, particularly by investing in productive ventures.
Commissioner for Special Duties, Auwalu Sankara, noted that an initial N58.2 million had already been distributed to victims shortly after the explosion.
He added that 126 individuals had been screened for the first phase of the current disbursement and assured that the process would be fair and transparent.
Grateful beneficiaries expressed appreciation to the government, pledging to make good use of the financial support.
