The Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, has denounced the recent mob attack on travelers along the Uromi-Obajana Road in Edo State, emphasizing the need to uphold the rule of law.
According to a statement by Force Public Relations Officer, ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, the victims, who identified themselves as hunters, were found carrying 19 locally made firearms when confronted by a local vigilante group.
Unconvinced by their claims, the vigilantes accused them of being kidnappers and resorted to violent mob action.
In response, the Edo State Police Command swiftly deployed officers to the scene, restoring order and arresting 14 suspects.
A manhunt is underway to track down others involved in the attack.
To ensure a transparent investigation, the IGP has directed the Force Criminal Investigation Department (FCID), under the leadership of DIG Sadiq Abubakar, to take charge of the case.
He reaffirmed that the Nigeria Police Force (NPF) will not tolerate extrajudicial killings, stressing that mob justice undermines due process.
Egbetokun also reminded the public that possessing unlicensed firearms is a serious crime, urging individuals to surrender illegal weapons or follow legal procedures for obtaining a license.
He called for calm and encouraged citizens to report suspicious activities through proper channels rather than resorting to violence.
The police have vowed to bring all perpetrators of the attack to justice, reinforcing their commitment to law enforcement and public safety.
