11 confirmed dead, 295 arrested following security forces clash with Shiite protesters

The violent confrontation between security forces and members of the banned Islamic Movement of Nigeria (IMN), also known as Shiites, which erupted at Banex Junction, Wuse 2, as resulted in the arrest of 295 individuals.

The clash left 11 people dead and 32 others seriously injured.

According to reports by Zagazola Makama, the incident occurred around 2:20 p.m. when IMN members, allegedly armed with firearms, cutlasses, catapults, sticks, stones, and homemade petrol bombs, launched an attack on military personnel stationed at Banex, along Aminu Kano Crescent.

The protest quickly turned violent as the demonstrators reportedly opened fire and hurled projectiles at security operatives, prompting a forceful response.

During the altercation, three military personnel sustained severe injuries and were rushed to the National Hospital, where one was later pronounced dead. The other two remain under medical care.

A senior security official stated that operatives used “minimal force” to disperse the protesters. “We managed to arrest 19 individuals at the scene, while others fled in different directions,” the officer added.

In the aftermath of the clash, a coordinated security sweep across Abuja led to the arrest of 295 individuals.

Security has since been reinforced at detention centres, while the injured and deceased were transported to Gwagwalada Specialist Hospital for medical attention.

Authorities have assured residents that the situation is under control, with ongoing surveillance and patrols in place to prevent further unrest.
