Wike lists projects for inauguration to mark Tinubu’s second year in office

The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has outlined several projects set for inauguration in May to commemorate President Bola Tinubu’s second year in office.

After inspecting various ongoing projects in Abuja on Thursday, Wike highlighted the Abuja International Conference Centre (AICC) as one of the key projects nearing completion.

He noted that the rehabilitation, being handled by Julius Berger, would restore the facility to an international standard.

According to the minister, the upgraded conference centre will attract major events but will also be managed differently to ensure proper maintenance.

“You know what happened in the past. It was leased to a senator who profited from it while allowing the structure to deteriorate. Once completed, we will sign a maintenance contract with Julius Berger to avoid such neglect,” Wike stated.

Additionally, the minister announced that two major interchanges along Wole Soyinka Way—one at Murtala Mohammed Way and another at Shehu Shagari Way—would be inaugurated in May. The projects, handled by Gilmor, are expected to enhance connectivity between Jahi, Jabi, Mabushi, and Utako Districts, as well as link the FCT Division of the Court of Appeal.

Another key road project to be commissioned is the ₦16 billion interchange at NICON Junction, which will provide a direct connection between Maitama and Katampe Districts via Gishiri village and Wole Soyinka Way.

“You can see that all the connecting roads leading to the Judges’ Quarters are also progressing well. The contractor has assured us that they will be completed before May,” he added.

Wike also revealed that several projects in satellite towns would be inaugurated, including the A2-Pai rural roads in Kwali Area Council, the Aguma Palace Road in Gwagwalada, and the dualisation of the Ushafa-Military Checkpoint Road in Bwari Area Council.

Another important project set for commissioning is the service lane from Apo Interchange to Wassa, currently being handled by CGC.

Addressing concerns about funding, the minister assured that the 2024 budget, which is financing these projects, remains in effect until June.

He also confirmed that the proposed 2025 budget had been submitted to President Tinubu and would soon be forwarded to the National Assembly for approval.

“With the passage of the 2025 budget, we won’t have any funding challenges,” Wike concluded.
