Residents of 10 communities surrounding the Odogbo Cantonment of the Nigerian Army in Ibadan have raised concerns over their safety after stray bullets from a military shooting exercise struck a woman and damaged at least 15 houses.
In response to the incident, the affected residents have called on President Bola Tinubu to intervene and urge the army to relocate the shooting range to a safer location.
The impacted areas include Omilabu Zones 1, 2, and 3, Omilabu Mainstream, Oluseyi, Idi-Omo, Anilelerin, Dominion Estate, Ajobo, and nearby communities.
In a statement, representatives of the communities—Prince Ijeru, Mr. Adekunle Taiwo, Mrs. Odekunle, Mr. Qozeem Alayo, Mr. Abdurauf, and Iya Eleedu—expressed frustration over the recurring issue.
They revealed that since 2017, they had repeatedly appealed to the federal government for assistance, but their concerns remained unaddressed.
Unlike previous exercises where residents were notified in advance, the latest shooting drills allegedly began without warning.
“The training commenced on Monday, March 17, 2025, without any prior notice, unlike past exercises,” the statement read.
“Just two days into the drill, a woman was struck by a stray bullet while in her shop and was rushed to the Military Hospital inside the barracks.”
The statement further revealed that over 15 houses had been affected by stray bullets, leaving the lives of more than 5,000 residents at risk.
The community leaders have urged authorities to act swiftly to prevent further casualties and property damage.
