The Northern Youth Council of Nigeria (NYCN) has voiced strong opposition to a proposed bill that seeks to upgrade 37 Local Council Development Areas (LCDAs) in Lagos State to full-fledged Local Government Areas (LGAs).
In a statement issued on Thursday, NYCN’s National President, Isah Abubakar, condemned the bill, calling it unjust and a potential threat to national unity.
On Wednesday, the House of Representatives passed the bill for a second reading. If it successfully navigates the legislative process, Lagos State’s LGAs will increase from 20 to 57, raising the total number of local governments nationwide from 774 to 811.
Abubakar argued that the proposal disproportionately favors Lagos State, undermining principles of fairness and balance in governance. He warned that such a move could create divisions across the country and called for a broader review of local government structures to ensure equitable representation.
He urged governors, particularly from the northern region, to resist the bill, emphasizing NYCN’s commitment to unity, justice, and equal governance.
He also called on lawmakers to reconsider the broader implications of the proposal before moving forward.
