Meningitis cases surge in Nigeria as Gombe records three fatalities

The ongoing outbreak of cerebrospinal meningitis (CSM) in Nigeria has claimed three lives in Gombe State, with health authorities confirming 31 positive cases as of March 27, 2025.

Addressing the media, Gombe State Commissioner for Health, Dr. Habu Dahiru, disclosed that 70 suspected cases had emerged in nine local government areas.

He noted that out of 63 cerebrospinal fluid samples collected, 31 tested positive for CSM.

In response to the growing crisis, the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (NCDC) has dispatched emergency teams to the hardest-hit states, including Kebbi, Sokoto, and Katsina.

An official statement from NCDC’s Head of Corporate Communications, Sani Datti, confirmed a nationwide increase in cases, with 807 suspected infections and 74 reported deaths across 22 states.

With a case fatality rate of 9.2%, health experts are prioritizing containment efforts in the worst-affected regions.

NCDC Director General Dr Jide Idris stated that deployed teams would remain on-site for an initial 14-day intervention period, closely coordinating with state health authorities to curb further spread.
