A Kano State High Court has sentenced a housewife, Fadila Adamu, to death by hanging for kidnapping an eight-year-old girl and throwing her into a well, leading to her death.
Justice Yusuf Muhammad-Ubale delivered the judgment on Friday, stating that the prosecution had successfully proven its case beyond a reasonable doubt.
He ruled that the defendant would face capital punishment for her actions.
The prosecution, led by Lamido Abba-Sorondinki, informed the court that the incident occurred on July 14, 2019, in the Tudun Wada Quarters of Kano.
According to the prosecution, Adamu kidnapped the minor and took her to her home, where she misled her sister by claiming that the girl was the daughter of a friend who had traveled to Ghana.
Three days later, on July 17, 2019, at around 6:30 p.m., the defendant threw the child into a deep well in the Tukuntawa Quarters, resulting in her death.
During the trial, the prosecution presented seven witnesses, along with the defendant’s statements and a medical report confirming the victim’s death.
Adamu denied committing the crime, but the prosecution argued that her actions violated Sections 274(b) and 221(a) of the Penal Code.
In her defense, the accused, represented by lawyer Zulaihat Tata, called four witnesses to testify on her behalf.
However, the court found her guilty and upheld the death sentence.
