NYSC members react as FG begins disbursement of ₦77,000 allowance

Must read

The Federal Government has commenced the payment of the revised ₦77,000 monthly allowance to members of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), following months of delay since its approval in September 2024.

As reported by Vanguard, Corps members in different states have confirmed receiving the increased stipend, although reports indicate that payments are being made in batches, leaving some still awaiting theirs.

NYSC Director-General, Brigadier General Olakunle Oluseye Nafiu, reassured corps members in Abuja that all outstanding payments would be settled soon.

Similarly, Minister of Youth Development, Ayodele Olawande, while speaking on Channels Television’s Politics Today, confirmed that the disbursement process had been finalized, allowing payments to proceed.

Corps members in states like Kwara, Kano, and Yobe have reported receiving their allowances, with indications that Batch A Stream 2 members were prioritized in the initial phase.

‘It’s Not Enough’

While many corps members welcomed the increase, some expressed concerns that ₦77,000 remains inadequate given the rising cost of living.

A corps member in Kwara State, Adepoju, acknowledged the payment, stating, “Yes, the ₦77,000 has been disbursed. The increment was long overdue.”

Similarly, Nkiruka, serving in Kano, confirmed, “The increase was necessary, and I have received my allowance.”

Others reacted with humor. Esther Eric playfully commented, “DG for president! Thank you, Sir. ₦77k well received. Let me go price a plot of land.”

However, some corps members questioned whether the raise truly addressed their financial struggles.

Stella Abiodun remarked, “Yes, we’ve started receiving ₦77k, but let’s be honest—it barely covers anything in today’s economy. This only proves one thing: they are listening. But we must keep demanding what we deserve instead of waiting for politicians to act out of goodwill. If we could push for this increase, we can fight for even bigger changes.”

Despite the progress, many corps members are still waiting for their turn, with concerns lingering over when the full disbursement will be completed.
