A gas explosion at Inner Galaxy Steel Company in Umuahala Obuzor, Ukwa West Local Government Area of Abia State, has resulted in two deaths and left 12 others injured.
Sources indicated that the explosion was triggered by a faulty valve at the gas plant, leading to a powerful blast that caused the casualties.
The injured victims were promptly evacuated to a medical facility in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, where they are currently receiving treatment.
Upon hearing about the incident, the Chairman of Ukwa West LGA, Pastor Dike Nwankwo, visited the site to assess the situation.
He confirmed that all the victims were customers of the company.
In a statement released by his Chief Press Secretary, Rev. Ihunanya Johnson Nwosu, the chairman dismissed claims that 20 people had died, stating that only two fatalities were confirmed.
“Following the distressing report, Pastor Dike Nwankwo immediately visited the scene to evaluate the situation. He engaged with emergency responders, facility management, and staff to ensure the injured received swift medical attention,” the statement read.
Emergency response teams acted swiftly, ensuring that the wounded were transported to a medical facility in Port Harcourt for urgent care.
