25-years-old takes his life over economic hardship in Osun

A 25-year-old man, Joseph Abodunrin, has reportedly ended his life in the Dagbolu community of Osogbo Local Government Area, Osun State, citing the country’s harsh economic conditions and its impact on his mental health.

His relative, Abodunrin Grace, confirmed the tragic incident on Thursday through her X handle, describing Joseph as someone who masked his struggles behind smiles while offering encouragement to others.

Expressing her grief, she wrote, “I still feel shattered. You were the best brother, always uplifting us while hiding your pain. We never saw this coming.

Now, we can’t get over it.” She urged others facing similar struggles to prioritize their mental health, emphasizing that life’s challenges are difficult for everyone.

Before his death, Joseph had frequently hinted at his suicidal thoughts on social media but refrained from acting on them for the sake of his younger siblings.

In a tweet on January 31, 2025, he wrote, “If not for my siblings, I would have committed suicide. They are still full of hope, and I don’t want to crush their dreams.”

However, on March 24, the day he took his own life, he shared a series of tweets expressing his final thoughts:

“I’m sorry I failed you all. I just couldn’t do it anymore… You won’t understand no matter how I explain.”

He encouraged his followers to keep striving and never give up on their dreams, adding, “This is my last wish. I ran my race and gave it my all. Now, I pass on the baton.”

In an earlier tweet on March 9, Joseph questioned his reasons for continuing to live, stating that he had been unable to find a meaningful answer.

He lamented that his struggles were beyond his control, adding that his attempts to seek help had only worsened his situation.

Despite providing details of his location before his death, efforts to recover his body have been unsuccessful. The location he shared, Dagbolu, appears to be inactive at the time of reporting.
