NYSC member dies of Lassa fever as Ogun declares outbreak

A female member of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) has died from Lassa fever in Ogun State, prompting the government to declare an outbreak.

The state’s Commissioner for Health, Dr. Tomi Coker, made this known in a statement on Wednesday.

She revealed that the deceased, a 25-year-old corps member, initially fell ill in Ondo State but was later taken to a government health facility in Ijebu North Local Government Area on March 18. Unfortunately, she succumbed to the illness the same day.

Describing Lassa fever as a viral hemorrhagic disease, Coker highlighted its symptoms, which include high fever, headaches, muscle pain, sore throat, nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, chest pain, and unexplained bleeding from various body openings.

She urged residents to seek medical attention immediately if they experience any of these symptoms, especially if a fever persists beyond 48 hours despite malaria or antibiotic treatment.

Coker also called on healthcare facilities, both public and private, to reinforce infection prevention and control measures.

She reassured the public that the government, in collaboration with the Rapid Response Team in Ijebu North East, is actively monitoring the situation through enhanced surveillance and community engagement efforts.
