Nigeria to save $267 million as Dangote begins local polypropylene production

Must read

The Manufacturers Association of Nigeria (MAN) has welcomed Dangote’s polypropylene production, stating that it will help revive Nigeria’s struggling textile industry and reduce the country’s dependence on costly imports.

MAN’s Director-General, Segun Ajayi-Kadir, highlighted this development in a television interview, noting that the textile sector, once a major employer in Northern Nigeria, had suffered due to a lack of local raw materials.

“With Dangote’s polypropylene production, Nigeria will no longer need to import 90% of its annual polypropylene requirements.

“This will save the country $267 million in foreign exchange while boosting local industries such as textiles, plastics, and furniture,” he said.

He further emphasized that the move would encourage investments, reduce costs for manufacturers, and contribute significantly to Nigeria’s economic growth.

Dangote’s $2 billion petrochemical plant in Lagos is set to produce 900,000 metric tonnes of polypropylene annually, exceeding the country’s demand and positioning Nigeria as a potential exporter.
