A two-storey commercial building on Iweka Road, near Ochanja Main Market in Onitsha South Local Government Area, Anambra State, was engulfed by fire on Tuesday evening.
Confirming the incident on Wednesday, the Chief of the Anambra Fire Service, Chukwudi Chiketa, stated that firefighters received the alert around 9:35 p.m. and quickly responded to the scene.
Although the cause of the fire is yet to be determined, the prompt intervention of the fire service helped minimize the extent of the damage.
Four shops within the building, stocked with furniture materials such as leather and foam, were affected.
However, many other shops were successfully saved from destruction.
Firefighters battled the blaze throughout the night, eventually concluding their operations at around 3:05 a.m. Meanwhile, business owners and residents were seen at the site, trying to recover whatever they could from the affected shops.
