The National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) has issued a warning against the unauthorized printing of National Identity Number (NIN) cards by individuals and business centers.
In a statement signed by its Head of Corporate Communications, Kayode Adegoke, the commission revealed that plans have been finalized to introduce an Improved General Multi-Purpose Card (GMPC).
This new card will serve as both an official means of identification and a payment solution.
NIMC expressed concern over reports of certain individuals and establishments illegally printing NIN cards and charging exorbitant fees for the service.
It clarified that no individual or organization has been authorized to print any card as a substitute for the GMPC.
The commission further warned that such unauthorized activities violate the NIMC Act 23 of 2007.
The commission urged the public to avoid using any unofficial NIN cards, emphasizing that only the official NIN slip is recognized as a legal means of identification.
It also stated that security agencies have been alerted to this illegal practice and have been instructed to take action against those involved.
NIMC reiterated its stance, stating that anyone caught engaging in the unauthorized issuance of NIN cards would face legal consequences.
