Lagos to deploy 3,000 smart cameras for traffic management

The Lagos State Government has announced plans to install 3,000 smart cameras across the state to improve road safety and enhance traffic management.

Akin-George Fashola, Director of the Vehicle Inspection Service (VIS), made this known during a radio program in Lagos on Tuesday.

He explained that the cameras would help enforce speed limits and serve as an electronic policing (e-policing) tool for monitoring road activities. The initiative is part of the state’s Intelligent Transportation System (ITS), aimed at better traffic law enforcement and accident reduction.

“This year, the VIS will intensify efforts to enforce speed limits in Lagos. Although not a new policy, stricter implementation is necessary to curb road accidents,” Fashola stated.

As part of Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s traffic management strategy, smart cameras have already been deployed in key areas such as Alapere, Mobolaji Bank Anthony Way, and Allen Junction.

According to Fashola, the speed limit at Alapere is set at 80 km/h toward Alausa and 60 km/h in the opposite direction toward Oworonshoki, considering pedestrian movement and nearby fuel stations. On Mobolaji Bank Anthony Way, the limit is 60 km/h due to heavy foot traffic and frequent road crossings.

At Allen Junction, the cameras are designed not to monitor speed but to detect traffic violations, including running red lights and stopping beyond designated lines.

Under the e-policing system, motorists exceeding speed limits will face penalties, with a fine of ₦50,000 for violations. Offenders will receive SMS notifications from VIS detailing their infractions and corresponding fines.

Fashola noted that drivers could contest fines if they had evidence, while the government would also provide technology-based proof to support enforcement.

He further highlighted improvements in VIS services, including the introduction of online roadworthiness certification for vehicle owners, emphasizing the state’s commitment to leveraging technology for better road management.
