The Chairman of the Inter-Party Advisory Council (IPAC) in Benue State, Ibrahim Idoko, has urged Governor Hyacinth Alia to take decisive action against any attempts to create instability that could justify declaring a state of emergency in the state.
Idoko made the statement while speaking to journalists at a Town Hall meeting organized by the European Union Support to Democratic Governance in Nigeria, held in Makurdi.
Condemning President Bola Tinubu’s declaration of a state of emergency in Rivers State, Idoko expressed concerns that similar plots might be unfolding in Benue.
He warned that certain individuals were attempting to create conditions that could lead to a similar intervention by the federal government.
“There are people considering this possibility in Benue. I have received information about such moves.
“Some elements are pushing for this outcome, but I trust Governor Alia to act promptly to prevent any escalation,” he stated.
He advised the governor to take proactive measures to stabilize the state, cautioning that any failure to act could result in a political crisis.
Idoko also criticized the state of emergency imposed on Rivers State, calling it an unnecessary disruption to Nigeria’s democratic process.
He expressed disappointment in the president’s decision, warning that it could set a dangerous precedent.
“It is shocking that the President would take such a position. This kind of action could encourage military officers to entertain dangerous thoughts. We must be honest with ourselves about the risks,” he added.
