A fire caused by a thunderstorm on Sunday gutted five classroom blocks at Saint Peter’s Primary School in Igbemo Ekiti, leading to the relocation of pupils to AUD Pilot Nursery and Primary School to continue their studies.
The fire broke out during a heavy downpour that lasted over an hour, leaving extensive damage to the school building.
Fortunately, since the incident happened outside school hours, no casualties were recorded.
Ekiti State Governor, Biodun Oyebanji, represented by Deputy Governor Monisade Afuye, visited the scene on Monday and assured the community that the government would rebuild the affected structures as soon as possible.
“I am deeply saddened by this unfortunate incident, but I am grateful that no lives were lost. The swift relocation of the pupils demonstrates the State Universal Basic Education Board’s commitment to their education,” the governor said.
He further pledged that the damaged classrooms would be reconstructed promptly so that normal academic activities could resume at the school.
During the visit, the governor also directed authorities to address concerns raised by teachers regarding open defecation and waste disposal at the temporary school premises.
Mrs. Adesola George-Ojo, Education Secretary for Irepodun/Ifelodun Local Government, highlighted the need to complete the school’s perimeter fencing to enhance safety and prevent further environmental risks.
