Fresh tension in Niger Delta as militants regroup, plan attacks

Must read

Concerns are growing in the Niger Delta following reports that militant leaders have reconvened in an undisclosed creek community to strategize coordinated attacks on oil facilities.

As reported by Vanguard, this development comes just days after President Bola Tinubu declared a state of emergency in Rivers State, effectively suspending Governor Siminalayi Fubara.

Although details remain unclear, a reliable source indicated that militant leaders are seeking full participation from various armed groups across the region and are engaging in extensive consultations with key figures.

Commander Bibi Oduku, Commandant General of the Riverine Security (Coast Guard of the Federation), confirmed the heightened security threats in the region and warned of the potential economic consequences for the country.

He urged President Tinubu to reconsider Fubara’s suspension, emphasizing that rising tensions could escalate into widespread attacks on federal government assets.

“Militant groups are planning coordinated strikes on government properties across Niger Delta states, while criminals might seize the opportunity to engage in unlawful activities. This could result in loss of lives, including civilians and security personnel deployed for peacekeeping,” Oduku stated.

Despite the looming threats, he assured that riverine security officers are on high alert and will collaborate with the Nigerian military and other agencies to prevent unauthorized activities and apprehend those involved in attacks.

Captains Eric Foutoru and ThankGod Oprom, overseeing the waterways in Rivers and Delta states, also pledged their support to the military in restoring stability in the region.

Oduku referenced a cautionary statement by former Presidential Amnesty Coordinator, Brigadier General Paul T. Boroh (retd.), urging Niger Delta youths not to let emotions drive them toward destructive actions.

“President Tinubu does not advocate violence, and young people should refrain from acts that could endanger lives and properties,” he noted.

Condemning recent pipeline vandalism in Rivers and Akwa Ibom states, Oduku vowed that security forces would track down and prosecute those responsible.

He further urged Niger Delta residents to embrace peace and allow legal processes to take their course.
