Catholic priest abducted in Imo

Unknown gunmen have kidnapped a Catholic priest, Rev. Fr. John Ubaechu, in Ejemekwuru, Oguta Local Government Area of Imo State.

The Owerri Catholic Archdiocese confirmed the abduction in a statement signed by its Chancellor and Secretary, Rev. Fr. Patrick Mbarah.

According to the statement, Ubaechu, who serves as the Parish Priest of Holy Family Catholic Church, Izombe, was taken on Sunday while traveling to attend the Priests’ annual retreat.

The Chancellor revealed that the abduction occurred along the Ejemekwuru road in Oguta and called for fervent prayers for the priest’s safe return.

“We regret to announce the kidnapping of Rev. Fr. John Ubaechu, which took place on Sunday, March 23, 2025. He was taken along the Ejemekwuru road while on his way to the Priests’ Annual Retreat,” the statement read.

The Archdiocese urged all Catholics and people of goodwill to pray for his quick and safe release, entrusting his fate to the intercession of the Blessed Virgin Mary, the Mother of Priests.
