Amnesty International has called for an independent and thorough investigation into the allegations made by Kogi Central Senator, Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, against Senate President Godswill Akpabio.
In a statement shared on 𝕏, Isa Sanusi, the Director of Amnesty International Nigeria, stressed the need for authorities to take the accusations seriously and ensure a fair inquiry.
Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan, a member of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), alleged that Akpabio had denied her the right to effectively represent her constituents because she rejected his alleged sexual advances.
She claimed that the Senate President had repeatedly blocked her from participating in debates and raising issues affecting her people.
Although Akpabio has denied the accusations, the Senate later suspended the female lawmaker, citing what it described as misconduct.
Reacting to the development, Amnesty International emphasized that the gravity of the allegations underscored the need for an independent, well-resourced, and impartial investigation.
The organization warned that failure to properly address the claims would contribute to a culture where survivors of sexual harassment struggle to seek justice while perpetrators evade accountability.
“The National Assembly cannot afford to ignore or trivialize these allegations,” Amnesty International stated, urging Nigerian authorities to take immediate action.
