Adewole Adebayo, the Social Democratic Party’s (SDP) presidential candidate in the 2023 elections, has dismissed any possibility of a merger or alliance with the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) or any other party ahead of the 2027 elections.
Speaking in Abeokuta, Ogun State, during a meeting with the state’s party executives on Saturday, Adebayo reaffirmed SDP’s independence and commitment to the welfare of Nigerians.
He was accompanied by former Sports Minister Solomon Dalung and party chairmen from Ogun, Oyo, and Lagos states, among others.
Addressing speculation that the SDP is aligned with the APC, Adebayo rejected such claims, insisting that the party remains distinct and focused on its ideology.
“Maybe APC has appendicitis, they should visit a hospital to treat it. We are a strong party, older than most others, and we stand on our own.
“I led the party in the last election, and I’m still here. I’m not a minister under Tinubu, and our leadership remains intact,” he stated.
He emphasized that the SDP prioritizes intellectual discourse over political attacks and remains committed to a centre-left ideology, advocating for investment in education, housing, healthcare, and infrastructure, as envisioned by Chief Obafemi Awolowo.
While reaffirming the party’s openness to new members, Adebayo stressed that only individuals of integrity would be welcomed. On the same note, SDP’s Ogun State chairman, Ola Williams, encouraged genuine entrants to join the party.
