The Federal Government has announced plans to clear 500 hectares of land in Benue State to enhance ranching and dairy production.
Minister of Livestock Development, Idi Maiha, made this known on Saturday during his visit to the Benue Livestock Investigation and Breeding Centre in Raav, Gwer East Local Government Area.
Maiha noted that the centre, which spans 2,400 hectares, has the capacity to support ranching and dairy farming.
However, the initial focus will be on clearing 500 hectares to prepare pastures before the rainy season.
He expressed concern over the poor state of the facility, which currently houses only 37 animals despite its vast land area.
To revamp the centre, a committee will be set up to outline strategies for its development. Plans include establishing dairy and ranching enterprises, as well as constructing essential facilities such as pens, isolation centres, maternity units, and staff accommodations.
The centre will also collaborate with Joseph Sarwuan Tarka University, Makurdi, for research purposes.
During the visit, the Director-General of the Benue Bureau for Livestock Development, Dr. Aondoakaa Asambe, highlighted that the initiative aligns with the state government’s vision of promoting ranching as a solution to security challenges.
He emphasized that developing the livestock industry would boost economic opportunities and enable displaced farmers to return to their lands.
Dr. Asambe also praised Governor Hyacinth Alia for his commitment to livestock development in the state.
