Panic erupted at the Watt business district in Calabar, Cross River State, on Sunday when a police inspector allegedly opened fire on civilians, leaving several people dead and others injured.
The officer, whose identity remains undisclosed, reportedly emerged from a nearby police station with a loaded firearm and began shooting indiscriminately.
A video shared by the 𝕏 account Official Calabar Gist captured the chaotic scene, showing at least one lifeless body on the ground.
The account claimed that multiple traders were killed, while several others sustained injuries.
Reacting to the incident via its official 𝕏 handle, the Cross River State Police Command confirmed the attack.
While withholding details on casualties and the officer’s identity, the command assured the public that the inspector had been taken into custody and was under detention.
“The situation was addressed this morning, and the inspector is now in detention. A press statement will be issued shortly,” the police stated.
