The federal government has rehabilitated 3,030 inmates across correctional facilities nationwide, equipping them with vocational skills to aid their reintegration into society.

Minister of Interior, Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, revealed this during a ministerial briefing organized by the Ministry of Information and National Orientation in Abuja.

He also highlighted efforts to enhance security in correctional centers to prevent external attacks.

He stated, “Between July and December 2024, a total of 3,030 inmates underwent rehabilitation, acquiring skills in carpentry, tailoring, poultry farming, fishery, hairdressing, and other trades. Additionally, violent extremist offenders were reformed through the De-radicalization Programme of the Nigerian Correctional Service during the last quarter of 2024.”

Tunji-Ojo noted that over 50 inmates are currently enrolled in academic programs at the National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN) Special Study Centers within correctional facilities.

He added that in 2024, 32 discharged inmates were provided with essential tools and materials to help them reintegrate into society.

To further improve security, he confirmed that measures have been put in place to fortify correctional centers against potential attacks.

He also announced a partnership with the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) to capture the biometric data of inmates.

Beyond prison reforms, the minister disclosed that the ministry has fully commenced operations in newly established federal marriage registries in Jalingo (Taraba State), Akure (Ondo State), Ibadan (Oyo State), Makurdi (Benue State), Asaba (Delta State), and Uyo (Akwa Ibom State).

He also noted that the government had recently launched the enhanced e-Passport service at diplomatic missions in Italy, Sweden, the Netherlands, Russia, Saudi Arabia, and other countries.

On fire safety, Tunji-Ojo said the Federal Fire Service has modernized its operations by enhancing communication systems and integrating Geographic Information System (GIS) technology for improved emergency response and incident mapping.

Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, commended Tunji-Ojo for introducing significant reforms aimed at repositioning the ministry.

He emphasized that the minister’s leadership has improved service efficiency, aligning with President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope agenda.
