The Lagos State Government has announced the closure of the PWD rail crossing to vehicular traffic starting Thursday, May 1, as part of efforts to enhance commuter safety.
Commissioner for Transportation, Oluwaseun Osiyemi, disclosed this in a statement issued on Wednesday in Lagos.
According to him, the decision follows a rise in collisions involving trains and vehicles at the crossing, which connects Ikeja and Maryland.
Osiyemi explained that after assessing operations on the newly launched Red Line Train Service, the Ministry of Transportation found it necessary to take proactive steps to prevent further accidents.
“As a result, the state government has decided to close the PWD rail crossing to vehicles from May 1. Motorists are advised to use alternative routes through Ikeja or Airport roads to reach their destinations,” he said.
He assured the public that officers of the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) would be stationed along nearby roads to ease traffic flow and minimize disruptions for road users.
