The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has arrested 7,798 individuals in the past two months for offences related to fake vehicle number plates.
FRSC Corps Marshal, Shehu Mohammed, disclosed this during a meeting with the House of Representatives Committee on FRSC in Abuja on Wednesday.
The session was convened to address concerns over the growing use of counterfeit vehicle number plates, which pose a significant threat to public safety and security.
In a statement issued by the Corps Public Education Officer, Olusegun Ogungbemide, Mohammed emphasized the need for legislative support to intensify efforts against the illegal practice.
He highlighted ongoing measures to clamp down on fake registrations despite resistance from vehicle owners using fraudulent plates.
“Following a proactive approach, FRSC recorded an alarming 7,798 arrests within just two months,” Mohammed stated.
He further explained that the increasing use of fake number plates obstructs security agencies’ ability to track and identify vehicles involved in criminal activities, making it a serious national security concern.
Appreciating the National Assembly’s role in supporting road safety initiatives, the Corps Marshal urged lawmakers to strengthen existing regulations to ensure offenders face justice.
He also called on the public to obtain genuine vehicle registration and report cases of fake number plates to the nearest FRSC office.
Chairman of the House Committee on FRSC, Hon. Abiodun Adesida, reaffirmed the National Assembly’s commitment to supporting the FRSC’s crackdown on fake number plates, describing it as a necessary step toward improving road safety and national security.
