The House of Representatives has ratified President Bola Tinubu’s declaration of a state of emergency in Rivers State, signalling legislative backing for his decision to suspend Governor Siminalayi Fubara and state lawmakers.
The president’s proclamation, made on Tuesday, placed the state under emergency rule for six months, with a sole administrator taking charge.
However, constitutional provisions require the National Assembly’s approval before such a directive can be implemented.
During Thursday’s plenary, Speaker Abbas Tajuddeen subjected the matter to a voice vote, where the majority ruled in favour.
He later confirmed that 243 legislators attended the session.
Before the vote, Rep. Ali Isa JC introduced a motion seeking to shorten the emergency period, arguing that six months was excessive.
The motion was seconded by Rep. Miriam Onuoha.
However, it was unclear whether the proposed amendment would be considered.
Despite concerns raised by some lawmakers, the House’s approval paves the way for the emergency rule to take full effect, pending further deliberations by the Senate.
