Rivers govt expresses shock over Fubara’s removal, questions Wike’s retention

The Rivers State Government has expressed deep concern over President Bola Tinubu’s decision to remove Governor Siminalayi Fubara while allowing Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, to remain in office despite allegations of fueling the state’s political crisis.

In a statement issued by the Commissioner for Information and Communications, Warisenibo Joe Johnson, the government described the move as unfair, stressing that Fubara has consistently upheld constitutional principles, promoted peace, and ensured good governance despite the ongoing political turmoil.

Johnson highlighted that since assuming office, the governor has focused on safeguarding lives and property while advancing the state’s development.

Even amid political tensions, Fubara remained committed to his constitutional responsibilities, prioritizing the welfare of Rivers people over personal or political interests.

Following President Tinubu’s intervention in the crisis, the state government adhered to the agreed resolutions, including reinstating previously resigned commissioners.

Additionally, it promptly implemented the Supreme Court’s judgment upon receiving the certified true copy, demonstrating respect for the rule of law and democratic governance.

However, the commissioner lamented that despite these efforts, lawmakers loyal to Wike, a former governor of the state, have continued to hinder peace and stability.

He questioned why Fubara was removed while Wike, whom he described as a key figure in the crisis, remained in office.

“It is surprising that the President removed the governor but retained his minister, who has been at the center of the crisis,” Johnson remarked.

Despite the political challenges, Johnson reassured residents that governance in Rivers State remains effective.

Salaries are being paid, development projects are ongoing, and security remains intact.

At this critical time, the government urged citizens to remain peaceful and law-abiding, reaffirming its commitment to upholding democracy and ensuring the continued progress of the state.

“We are a resilient people and will navigate this situation with wisdom, patience, and unwavering faith in democracy,” Johnson added.

The Rivers State Government emphasized that it remains dedicated to the well-being and prosperity of its citizens as it continues to manage the evolving political landscape.
