Rivers Assembly backs Tinubu’s state of emergency declaration

Must read

The Rivers State House of Assembly has thrown its support behind President Bola Tinubu’s decision to impose a state of emergency in the state.

In a statement released late Tuesday, Speaker Martin Amaewhule acknowledged the Assembly’s acceptance of the president’s directive despite their initial reservations.

“We stand by this declaration, even though it is not the outcome we had wished for. However, Mr. President has acted in the best interest of the nation,” Amaewhule stated.

The Speaker attributed the state’s crisis to Governor Siminalayi Fubara, accusing him of repeatedly disregarding court rulings and failing to govern in accordance with the constitution.

“The turmoil in Rivers State stems largely from the governor’s misconduct, his persistent defiance of judicial orders, and his obstruction of the Assembly’s duties,” he asserted.

Amaewhule urged residents to remain peaceful and cooperate with the newly appointed Sole Administrator, assuring that the Assembly would work closely with him to restore order.

“As the Sole Administrator assumes office, we call on the people to stay calm. The Assembly will provide him with all necessary support to ensure stability,” he added.

He also expressed gratitude to the people of Rivers State for their patience, prayers, and support during this challenging time.

On Tuesday, President Tinubu declared a state of emergency in Rivers State, suspending Governor Fubara, Deputy Governor Ngozi Odu, and all elected state lawmakers for six months.

The move, according to the president, was aimed at restoring stability following the ongoing power struggle between the governor and the state legislature.

To oversee the state’s administration, Tinubu appointed former Chief of Naval Staff, Admiral Ibokette Ibas, as the Sole Administrator.
