BREAKING: PDP Govs reacts to emergency declaration in Rivers

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Governors’ Forum has harshly criticized President Bola Tinubu’s declaration of a state of emergency in Rivers State, labelling the action as divisive, undemocratic, and unfair.

AFRIPOST had reported that Tinubu announced the emergency measure in a nationwide address on Tuesday, citing security concerns and the need to restore order.

The decision led to the suspension of Governor Siminalayi Fubara, his deputy Ngozi Odu, and the entire Rivers State House of Assembly for an initial period of six months.

Retired Vice Admiral Ibokette Ibas was subsequently appointed as the state’s administrator.

Reacting in a statement on Wednesday, the PDP Governors’ Forum, chaired by Bauchi State Governor Bala Mohammed, voiced deep concern over the political situation in Rivers, blaming Tinubu for worsening tensions.

The forum also criticized the president for failing to address the alleged role of Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Minister Nyesom Wike in the state’s crisis, arguing that Wike had been emboldened by Tinubu’s inaction.

The PDP governors condemned what they described as an unjustified attack on democratic governance, warning that such actions could undermine Nigeria’s democracy and heighten political instability.

They aligned with the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), which raised concerns about the legality of suspending elected officials and vowed to challenge Tinubu’s decision in court.

In conclusion, the governors urged Tinubu to reconsider his stance, stressing that reversing the decision was necessary to protect democratic principles and national stability.
