Northern CAN backs new leadership amid internal rift

Must read

The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) in the 19 Northern states and Abuja has pledged to remain focused on its mission, steering clear of unnecessary confrontations with critics.

A leadership crisis recently rocked the association, primarily over the tenure of Rev. Yakubu Pam, whose term as chairman allegedly expired more than two years ago.

The situation escalated when a faction led by Rev. John Hayab conducted an election, declaring him the new chairman.

However, Pam’s camp dismissed the election, calling it a “religious coup” and “fraudulent.”

Despite the controversy, CAN chairmen from the Northern states and the Federal Capital Territory publicly endorsed Hayab’s leadership on Sunday, March 9, 2025.

They urged Rev. Pam’s outgoing administration to hand over all association properties without delay.

Speaking at a dinner held in Kaduna on Monday to celebrate the new executives, Hayab emphasized that the association’s work would stand as proof of its commitment.

He lamented the religious and ethnic divisions plaguing Northern Nigeria, describing them as major obstacles to progress and unity.

Reaffirming CAN’s dedication to truth and inclusivity, Hayab vowed to champion the rights of Northern Christians, ensuring their voices are heard.

He called on the Christian community to embrace unity and collaboration for sustainable development.

“We will continue to be a voice for Northern Christians, defending truth and speaking to power with love and understanding,” Hayab stated.

“It is disheartening to see us perceived as divided and intolerant. We must usher in a new era—one of love, respect, and partnership. Our region is blessed, but divisions have cost us dearly. It’s time for a change in mindset.”

Ambassador Elizabeth Azizi, leader of the Northern CAN Women’s Wing, expressed confidence in Hayab’s leadership, calling him a capable leader who will advance the Christian cause in the North.

She criticized Pam and CAN Secretary Elder Sunday Oibe for overstaying their tenure by nearly three years, urging them to step aside gracefully.

Similarly, Evangelist Musa Misal, Northern CAN Youth Leader, reaffirmed youth support for Hayab and urged Pam and Oibe to accept the transition in good faith.

He also called for the immediate transfer of all association properties across the region to the new leadership.

The event was attended by top Christian leaders from the North, including Bishop Mohammed Naga (Borno), Dr. Grace Kaka (Bauchi), Rev. Godwin Adole (Sokoto), and Rev. Emeka Obianyor, among others.
