Students of Akwa Ibom State Polytechnic, Ikot Osurua, staged a protest on Monday at the institution’s main gate, decrying alleged police brutality and insecurity within their community.
Led by the Student Union President, Geoffrey George, the protesters carried placards with messages such as “End police brutality now,” “Protect, save, don’t abuse,” and “This extortion must stop.”
Addressing journalists, George expressed concern over the presence of hoodlums and petty criminals, stating that instead of ensuring safety, police activities had instilled fear among students.
He alleged that students were frequently harassed, extorted, and abused by officers, citing a recent viral video where a student was reportedly beaten and dragged by policemen.
“Our students are being extorted in Ikot Ekpene. Those living in nearby communities are particularly vulnerable. Hoodlums snatch phones and attack students with weapons. We cannot continue to live this way,” he said.
In response, the Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Timfon John, stated that Commissioner of Police Baba Azare had invited student leaders for a meeting to address their concerns.
