Peter Obi condemns alleged threats against NYSC member over criticism of Tinubu’s govt

Must read

Peter Obi, the Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, has criticized the alleged intimidation of Ushie Rita Uguamaye, a National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) member, following her public criticism of President Bola Tinubu’s administration.

Uguamaye, also known as Raye, gained attention after posting a viral video lamenting the country’s economic difficulties.

Shortly after, she claimed to have received threats from NYSC officials due to her statements.

Reacting to the development in a statement on X, Obi said he had also faced similar threats for offering constructive criticism of government policies.

He condemned any attempt to silence dissent, stating that such actions undermine democracy and accountability.

“The reports that an NYSC member, Ushie Rita Uguamaye, has been threatened for voicing her concerns reflect a growing trend in our society—where those who speak truthfully are met with intimidation rather than engagement,” Obi wrote.

He further noted that a government that suppresses free speech lacks transparency and often resorts to corruption.

He urged the current administration to respect the role of criticism in governance and embrace democratic values instead of stifling opposition.
