With the rainy season approaching, the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) in Ondo State has urged motorists to practice defensive driving and remain patient to minimize road accidents.
Dr. Samuel Ibitoye, the FRSC State Sector Commander, gave this advice in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Akure on Sunday.
He stressed the importance of ensuring that vehicles are in good condition ahead of the rainy season.
“As we anticipate increased rainfall, drivers must take necessary precautions by checking their vehicle components, including wipers, headlamps, air conditioners, and tyres, to ensure they are in optimal working condition,” he said.
He advised drivers to avoid traveling in heavy downpours, recommending that they park safely until visibility improves.
“It’s also essential to use headlamps during rainfall to enhance visibility for both the driver and other road users,” he added.
Ibitoye further emphasized that defensive driving and patience are crucial during this period, urging motorists to avoid unnecessary speeding.
“To save lives, drivers must remain cautious and patient on the roads. Speeding during poor weather conditions increases the risk of accidents,” he warned.
The FRSC commander also stated that traffic offenders would face penalties and called on transport unions and stakeholders to support efforts aimed at making roads safer.
“Our main objective is to ensure that vehicles on the roads are roadworthy and do not pose any danger to lives. Keeping vehicles in good condition plays a significant role in preventing accidents,” he noted.
Additionally, he encouraged passengers to speak out against reckless driving, reminding them that their safety is equally important.
“More passengers lose their lives in accidents than drivers. If your driver is driving dangerously, ask them to slow down. If they refuse, report them at the nearest FRSC, police, or military checkpoint,” Ibitoye advised.
