The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has dismissed concerns over former Vice President Atiku Abubakar’s recent engagement with Social Democratic Party (SDP) member Hamza Al-Mustapha, stating that such interactions pose no threat to the party’s stability.
Speaking to DAILY POST, PDP’s Deputy National Publicity Secretary, Ibrahim Abdullahi, emphasized that the party remains focused on uniting opposition forces to challenge the ruling party in 2027.
“Atiku’s meetings with political figures are his personal decisions and not reflective of the PDP’s official stance,” Abdullahi said. “As a party, we encourage engagements across the opposition spectrum. Our focus is on forming alliances for the next election cycle, and this is not something that worries us.”
Addressing speculation about Atiku’s possible defection to the SDP, Abdullahi stressed that the party would handle the situation if it arises.
“If he chooses to leave, that is his decision. No individual is bigger than the party,” he added.
On the issue of former Rivers State Governor Nyesom Wike securing court orders to prevent his expulsion from the PDP, Abdullahi dismissed the legal battles as attempts to destabilize the party, insisting they would not succeed.
“These court orders are becoming excessive, but PDP has a history of overcoming challenges. We have faced political turbulence before, and we will survive this as well,” he stated.
Reaffirming PDP’s resilience, Abdullahi pointed to the party’s legacy, highlighting its contributions to economic growth, democratic reforms, and anti-corruption efforts.
“No political party in Nigeria’s history has endured as long as the PDP. We led the country for 16 years, leaving behind a strong economic foundation. Our legacy is intact, and we are poised for renewal,” he concluded.
As political realignments continue ahead of 2027, PDP remains determined to retain its relevance despite internal and external pressures.
