Newcastle clinches EFL Cup with historic victory over Liverpool

Must read

Newcastle United secured the English Football League (EFL) Cup with a 2-1 victory over Liverpool at Wembley Stadium on Sunday.

The Magpies put on a spirited performance, scoring in each half through Dan Burn and Alexander Isak, while Federico Chiesa netted Liverpool’s lone goal.

The win marked Newcastle’s first major silverware in 56 years, with their last triumph being the 1969 Inter-Cities Fairs Cup. It was also their first domestic title since the 1955 FA Cup.

Despite Liverpool’s dominance in the Premier League this season, Newcastle proved the sharper side.

The Reds, competing in their 15th EFL Cup final, fielded a strong squad but opted to rest first-choice goalkeeper Alisson Becker, with Caoimhin Kelleher taking his place.

Jarrell Quansah also started in defense due to Trent Alexander-Arnold’s injury.

Newcastle, missing only the suspended Anthony Gordon, made early attempts at goal, with Jacob Murphy and Sandro Tonali coming close.

Their persistence paid off in first-half stoppage time when Burn powered in a header to break the deadlock.

Liverpool attempted a comeback after the break, but Isak doubled Newcastle’s lead in the 54th minute.

Though Chiesa pulled one back for the Reds in stoppage time, Newcastle held firm to end a five-match losing streak in cup finals and secured their first win over Liverpool in 18 meetings.

The victory also marked a milestone for Newcastle’s manager, who became the first English coach to win a major trophy since Harry Redknapp led Portsmouth to FA Cup success in 2008.
