Labour Party suspends 30 SWC members

Must read

The Imo State Executive Council (SEC) of the Labour Party (LP) has suspended 30 of its State Working Committee (SWC) members for three months over an alleged attempt to remove the party’s state chairman, Calistus Ihejiagwa.

The decision was reached during a meeting held in Owerri on Saturday, following a motion moved by Richardson Madumere from Ezinihitte Mbaise and seconded by John Nwaigwe.

The suspension comes as a response to an earlier move by some party members who had attempted to oust the state chairman.

During the meeting, the SEC also passed a vote of confidence in the party’s National Chairman, Julius Abure, as well as the state executive leadership under Ihejiagwa.

Among those suspended are Paulinus Udechukwu, Emeka Ihejirika, the party’s legal adviser, and 28 others.

Speaking on the suspension, Ihejiagwa accused the affected members of engaging in acts of indiscipline, which he claimed brought disrepute to the party and fueled internal crises.

“They have been suspended for three months due to their misconduct, which tarnished the image of our party and instigated unrest. However, they will be granted a fair hearing to present their grievances. A five-member committee will be established to investigate the matter and report back within three months,” Ihejiagwa stated.

He further emphasized that their actions violated Article 19 of the party’s constitution, warranting the disciplinary measures taken against them.
