JUST IN: Wike visits Abalama amid protests, opposition

Former Rivers State Governor and current Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has arrived in Abalama, Asari-Toru Local Government Area, for a Thanksgiving Service and Civic Reception in his honor, despite strong opposition from the community’s monarch and residents.

His visit was met with resistance as protesters took to the streets, blocking roads and carrying placards to express their disapproval.

Videos circulating online show residents, including women and youths, rejecting Wike’s presence, citing past remarks in which he allegedly described the Kalabari people as a minority in the state.

Adding to the controversy, the Amayanabo of Abalama, King Dr. A. B. Big Tom Tom JP, officially distanced himself and the community from the event.

In a letter dated March 12, 2025, and addressed to the Rivers State Commissioner of Police, the monarch stated that he was unaware of the program until he saw it on social media.

He cited security concerns as the reason for opposing the gathering.

Despite the protests and opposition, Wike’s visit proceeded, highlighting the deep political tensions in Rivers State.
