BREAKING: Protests erupt in Rivers over Wike’s planned visit to LG community

Residents of Abalama in Rivers State have taken to the streets in protest ahead of the scheduled visit of former governor and current Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike.

The demonstration comes after the community’s traditional ruler, King Dr A. B. Big Tom Tom JP, rejected plans for a Thanksgiving Service and Civic Reception in Wike’s honour.

In a letter addressed to the Rivers State Commissioner of Police on March 12, 2025, the monarch cited escalating political tensions and security risks as reasons for his decision.

He also expressed dismay at learning about the event through Facebook despite being the community’s paramount ruler.

“I, along with my council of chiefs, have decided that no political gatherings should take place in Abalama due to the prevailing political crisis in Rivers State. I even made a public announcement on the radio to that effect,” the letter stated.

Videos circulating online show angry protesters, including women and young people, carrying placards opposing Wike’s visit.

Some demonstrators obstructed roads, leading to movement disruptions in the area.

The protests highlight the deepening political divide between Wike and his successor, Governor Siminalayi Fubara, which continues to fuel unrest in the state.
