SDP reaffirms Agunloye as national secretary amid El-Rufai’s defection

The Social Democratic Party (SDP) has reaffirmed Dr Olu Agunloye’s position as National Secretary, dispelling concerns that his role was under threat following the recent entry of former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai and other new members.

In a statement issued after its National Working Committee (NWC) meeting on Thursday, March 13, 2025, the party dismissed speculations of internal discord, emphasizing that the influx of new members does not disrupt the existing leadership structure.

The SDP condemned protests against Agunloye and vowed to investigate those behind them, warning that any party member found culpable would face disciplinary measures.

The party further reiterated that Agunloye’s role remains secure, with all current NWC members elected in 2022 expected to serve their full four-year term until 2026 unless removed through a new convention.

“There is no crisis whatsoever in the SDP as a result of the influx of new members. There is no threat to Dr Agunloye’s position as National Secretary of the SDP,” said National Publicity Secretary Mr Rufus Ayenigba.

Addressing Agunloye’s ongoing legal case with the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) over the 2003 Mambilla Power Project, the SDP maintained that an accused person remains innocent until proven guilty by a competent court.

On Friday, SDP’s 2023 presidential candidate, Chief Adewole Adebayo, echoed similar sentiments while speaking on AriseTV’s The Morning Show.

He commended Agunloye’s past sacrifices for the party, noting that he had willingly stepped down from his role as National Chairman to serve as National Secretary in the party’s interest.

The SDP concluded by reaffirming its commitment to internal democracy and adherence to constitutional principles, assuring members and the public of stability within its ranks.
