The Edo State Police Command has successfully rescued Reverend Father Philip Ekeli, who was abducted alongside Seminarian Peter Andrew on March 3.
In a statement issued in Benin on Friday, the command’s spokesperson, CSP Moses Yamu, confirmed the development but regrettably disclosed that the seminarian did not survive captivity.
According to reports from the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), the two were taken from St. Peter’s Catholic Church, Iviukha, in Etsako East Local Government Area.
Yamu stated that a joint effort between security forces and local vigilantes led to Fr. Ekeli’s release on March 13 at approximately 4:52 p.m. in Amughe Community.
“Efforts are ongoing to recover the remains of the seminarian and capture the remaining members of the gang,” he said.
Recalling earlier developments, Yamu noted that one suspect was neutralized and four others were apprehended on the day of the abduction.
He assured that security forces are intensifying operations to track down those still at large.
The police command strongly condemned the killing of the seminarian and reaffirmed its commitment to ensuring justice.
Yamu also urged the public to stay vigilant and promptly report any suspicious activities to law enforcement authorities.
