Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State has pledged prompt support for traders affected by the fire outbreak at Alesinloye Market in Ibadan.
Speaking during an assessment visit to the market on Wednesday, the governor, represented by his deputy, Bayo Lawal, assured that relief efforts would commence once the government receives a full report on the incident.
The fire, which broke out around 9:00 p.m. on Tuesday, destroyed several shops and goods worth millions of naira.
Expressing sympathy for those who suffered losses, Makinde emphasized the government’s commitment to providing immediate relief through the Oyo State Emergency Management Agency (OYSEMA).
He added that the state would collaborate with the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) and other well-meaning individuals to support the victims.
He also directed the Ibadan South-West Local Government and the Local Council Development Area (LCDA) to enhance security measures within the market.
Additionally, he instructed the council authorities to compile a detailed report on the fire’s cause and assess the number of affected shops.
“This market is a major commercial hub, and it is heartbreaking to witness such devastation,” Makinde stated. “We pray that such incidents do not occur again.”
